Philani close on acquiring Vietnamese nationality

South African striker Philani, who is considered an icon of Becamex Binh Duong, is reported to be completing last formalities to become Vietnamese. The 31-year-old has been an integral part of Chelsea Vietnam since he joined the club in 2004.

Binh Duong fans are really looking forward to it and hope Philani would be able to play for Vietnam national team because he is one of most quality players in V-League and a model professional on and off the field.

A galaxy at Navibank Sai Gon

Navibank Saigon, who escaped from relegation through play-off last season, seems becoming a new powerhouse in V-League. A series of Vietnamese internationals have joined the club which is based in the most prosperous city of Vietnam. Nguyen Quang Hai, Phan Van Tai Em, Luong Van Duoc Em and Phan Van Santos are the most notable names. In term of foreigners, the club has recruited V-League 2007 & 2008 top scorer Jose Emidio Almeida, whose talent had been proved for recent years. Some other names such as Thai international Nirut Surasiang, Brazilian duo Leandro Cruz and Giovanni are also quality ones. It seems an interesting season is awaiting for Navibank Sai Gon.

Yohan Cabaye is Vietnamese?

In the wake of Vietnam's AFF Cup failure and the surprising success of Philippines national team with a lot of overseas Filipino talents, people here are actively seeking for players of Vietnamese descent around the world. And the latest name they found is Yohan Cabaye, who is playing for Lille OSC in the Ligue 1. He turns out to have a Vietnamese grandmother!

In a interview with Hourrafoot, when asked:
Yohan, comme Ludovic Obraniak, quelle autre nationalité pourrais-tu demander si Laurent Blanc ne te sélectionne pas en équipe de France après la Coupe du Monde ?
Ah bon, c’est fait, c’est Laurent Blanc ? Je pourrais jouer pour le Viêt-Nam, ma grand-mère est vietnamienne ! Mais ça fait un peu loin.

I can't read French but it can be translated as something like this:

Yohan, as Ludovic Obraniak (a French player who chose to play for Poland), what other nationality would you have if Laurent Blanc doesn't select you for France national team after the World Cup?

Oh, it's done, Laurent Blanc?  I could play for Vietnam, my grandmother is Vietnamese!  But it's a bit far.

Yes, it's an interesting story there. However, he has made his debut for France national team in August 2010 and will not be available for Vietnam any more. There are a lot of young Vietnamese players playing in France, Germany and Czech Republic. Just hope they will become good ones and play for Vietnam someday.

New sponsor for V-League

VFF has signed a 3-year sponsorship deal with with Eximbank on December 15. As a result, V-League will get 30 billion VND per year from its new sponsor. This doubled the amount of last season which it got from PetroVietnam Gas.

The competition therefore has a new name: Eximbank V-League 2011-2013.

Not bad at all

Vietnam will enter the decisive match with Singapore tomorrow, knowing that only victory can secure them a place in semi-final as Philippines is unlikely to lose their historic chance to advance to next round.

If Vietnam can somehow make it, it's good and Vietnam may defend the AFF Cup title. This perspective, however, doesn't make the national team any better. Champions be champions again. It would so sweet that some people might think we are on the top and doing very well right now. Advancing to higher level such as challenging Asian powerhouses? No, if big bosses even thought about it, they would have done something different to the our football.

Thus, a failure may be necessary right now. People would, if fortunately, realize that there are so many problems with the national team and our football in general. Why did so many good players withdraw from the national team? Why was Calisto prevented to call up best players? Why are still some old names with silly performances around here? Why is VFF made up of virtually no club representative and can't control our football? And government interference? And a bunch of bullshit things like AFC Champions League disqualification because of not submitting documents or playing AFC Cup with under-18 team or V-League Supporters Award given to a club with only 200 hired fans.

There are a lot of questions that we can't answer. Or are we pretending to be naive and lying each other?

Vietnam stunned by Philippines

Vietnam 0-2 Philippines

A brilliant defense and counter attack performance by Philippines earned them a deserved victory over hosts Vietnam.

For Vietnam, they will need a victory against Singapore to be surely qualified. Even a draw will not help Vietnam advance to the semi-final if Philippines can earn at least a single point from eliminated side Myanmar. Personally, I don't have much hope in this Vietnam team.
