Football crazy

An interesting article by Jon Bellwood about prospect, problems and some Calisto's comments about Vietnamese football.

FOOTBALL CRAZY

In a country where it seens you canwatch more of the Premier League than back in the competition’s native England, you would think the passion for football would lead to the production of a player or two worthy of selling their skills in Europe. But as of yet, this is not the case. Except for the player Cong Vinh last year, the members of the Vietnamese national team are solely plying their trade here in South-East Asia.

A quick look at the FIFA world rankings gives a hint as to why. Vietnam ranks a lowly 118th, below such titans of the world game as the Cape Verde Islands and Yemen. The highest ranked team in the region is Thailand at 105, who actually sit one position above a North Korean outfit likely to be on the receiving end of at least one annihilation this summer in South Africa. Singapore are next up, placed 127th, with Cambodia and Laos bringing up the rear in 171st and 174th respectively.

A Matter of Size?

Height is often given as a reason for why Asian players can’t be successful, preventing this region from producing the next Peter Crouch or an imposing centre back such as Lucio of Brazil, but given the success of Ji-Sung Park and Hidetoshi Nakata in recent times, that factor can also be discounted. Another excuse is the climate and the heat, but considering the strength of South American teams since the dawn of the World Cup, we can safely toss that one out of the window. So what is it? Certainly facilities have to be taken into account: these are countries which do not have the millions and billions needed to invest in the best of the best in the football world. And yet, it’s also hardly likely that the likes of Honduras and North Korea, who will be competing in South Africa this summer, have the facilities of the European and South American heavyweights either. The Vietnamese national team coach Henrique Calisto feels facilities are a factor, saying they are a “big problem”.

“If you look to China or South Korea, the facilities are a hundred times better than in Vietnam,” he explains, citing the stadiums, pitches and the standard of the pitches as examples.

He adds that money is not a problem for Vietnamese football, so hopefully better facilities will be on the cards soon. He also notes that in the last three years, teams of the likes of Arsenal and Benfica have hosted academies in Vietnam, which is a positive sign for football in the region.

The V League

The Vietnam V League seems to be acknowledged as the strongest in the region, and a quick scan of the league’s squads reveals players on the books from countries as far flung as Brazil, Argentina and Nigeria. Ranking fifth among Asian leagues, the tournament averages over 10,000 spectators a game, which suggests a certain robustness. It may not be a league that is going to set the world alight, but it should be more than capable enough of producing the talent required to enhance Vietnam’s standing on the world stage. Calisto thinks the V League has come on in leaps and bounds in the last five years, saying it could now be compared to a second tier league in Europe, something of a similar standard to Spain’s Segunda Division and Portugal’s Liga di Honra.

A look at the teams in the Asian qualifying region shows that there are some solid outfits capable of upsetting anyone in the world game on their day, but there is no perennial colossus of world football to strike fear into the hearts of their rivals. The likes of Japan, South Korea and Australia would certainly be hard to beat, but does that sound more unlikely for any of the local teams than minnows Luxembourg beating Switzerland 2-1, away from home, during qualifying for South Africa? Luxembourg ranks even with Singapore at 127th in the FIFA rankings, Switzerland lie in 26th, well ahead of both South Korea and Japan. Outside of those big three, the teams in Asia show nothing outside of a few World Cup appearances of ever doing anything on the world stage. These are the teams that Calisto sees Vietnam now being able to take on. He wants Vietnam to be able to compete with and win against countries from the Middle East and elsewhere in Asia.

The European Factor

For that to happen, it would seem they need to start getting some of their players to Europe to compete in the best leagues in the world. The rise of Australia, Japan and South Korea as factors in the world game can be correlated to their players starting to play in the biggest leagues against the best competition. Calisto sees some potential in his current squad to make it in Europe. Last August winger/striker and national hero Cong Vinh signed with Portuguese first division side Leixoes for six months, and although he didn’t set the world on fire, he made appearances in the first team and scored a couple of goals, showing Vietnamese players can make it in Europe.

Goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong signed a record deal to make him the most expensive goalkeeper in V League history in March, and is highly rated by his national coach, who said Truong has the potential to be the “best goalkeeper ever in Vietnam”. He also feels that Truong has the skills and height to be able to play in Europe. Another name to watch out for is 21-year-old Nguyen Trong Hoang who Calisto describes as a “creative midfielder who with the right coaching could be one of the best players in Vietnamese footballing history.”

Although these players may not make it to Europe, the fact their Portuguese coach thinks they have the ability to is a good sign for the future.

Mind Over Body

Calisto feels the most important thing going forward is the mental side of the game: he says getting into the physical shape to be able to play is not a problem.

“Understanding the methods, the tactics and the psychology,” he says, “are the things to improve going forward.” He wants his team to have “intelligence in movement”, to think about what they will do when they’re both on and off the ball, and to “make good decisions quickly.” Calisto also thinks coaching in the region needs to improve and that “to be a coach it is not enough to be an old player. You must study.” He points out the improvement of the Portuguese national side, which came after the qualifications needed to become a coach at the higher levels required much more extensive study. He also lauds Da Nang coach Le Huynh Duc as part of the “new generation” of coaches with a “new mentality” who will take Vietnamese football forward. So, how soon will it be before one of the teams in South-East Asia can contend for a World Cup spot?

Calisto thinks it will be “at least ten years” and that the Vietnamese team needs to prove itself against teams from Europe and the Middle East before they start thinking of World Cup qualification. His aim is to bring consistency to the Vietnamese game and one of his goals is “to win the next Suzuki Cup or at the very least make the finals”, and to see the U-23 team go one step further and win at the next SEA Games. Vietnamese football and the game in the region in general has taken a huge leap, but it will need to take an equally big or bigger jump to get a whiff of making it to the world stage.

Duc Eto'o

Full Name: Nguyen Anh Duc
DOB: 24/8/1985
Height: 1.80 m
Club: Binh Duong

Binh Duong striker Nguyen Anh Duc, who earned the nickname Duc Eto'o amongst his fans, is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous marksmen in V-league at the moment. His last goal against Nam Dinh was his 13th goal in 12 games. With that high scoring rate, Anh Duc was finally considered an important first-team player of Binh Duong, what he hadn't been able to achieve since he joined 'Chelsea Vietnam' 5 years ago. The powerful rise of Anh Duc is something you can hardly see in V-League, where foreign strikers dominate. More especially, most of his goals are from headers, which are not strong point of Vietnamese strikers in general. The 25-year-old striker is now arguably one of the first names to fill in Vietnam squad for next AFF Cup.

Now look around to consider more candidates for forward position of Vietnam national team:

Huynh Kesley (Binh Duong)
Last year Golden Boot winner is still leading the 2010 race, with a total of 17 goals in all competitions so far. He is quite capable of winning a place in Vietnam squad but regarding the silence of VFF, it's still unknown if this Brazilian-born striker would be called up.
Chance to be selected: Unknown.

Le Cong Vinh (Ha Noi T&T)
Injured. It looks like it will take him about 6 months to recover so his chance to play AFF Cup 2010 is little. His form at club was also not good with only one goal this season.
Chance to be selected: Little

Nguyen Quang Hai (Khanh Hoa)
The Vietnam international is main scorer of Khanh Hoa this season with 6 goals so far. His chance to be included in Vietnam squad is quite bright.
Chance to be selected: High

Nguyen Viet Thang (Ninh Binh)
An important member of Vietnam winning last AFF Cup but still struggling to find himself at his new club. He will have a lot to do in the second phase of this season to convince Calisto for a place in Vietnam squad.
Chance to be selected: Decent

Hoang Dinh Tung (Thanh Hoa)
Young striker Hoang Dinh Tung is playing very well at his club but often struggle to show his best at international stage. He has a medium chance to play at AFF Cup 2010.
Chance to be selected: Medium

Luong Van Duoc Em (Dong Thap)
Many people believe Duoc Em has finally reached his potential this season. He can play not only as a striker but also a winger. Not to mention his ability to score goals from free-kicks. He has bright chance to be called up.
Chance to be selected: High

Phan Thanh Binh (DT Long An)
Once considered one of best young talents of Vietnamese football but sadly Thanh Binh of today can't play as well as he used to when 17 years old.
Chance to be selected: Very little

Pham Van Quyen (SLNA)
If Van Quyen doesn't improve his form, his chance for AFF Cup 2010 will be as much as Phan Thanh Binh's.
Chance to be selected: Very little

Some other names can spring some surprise: Ha Minh Tuan (Da Nang), Dinh Hoang Max (Hai Phong), Thach Bao Khanh (Thanh Hoa).

Vietnam NT face injury crisis before Frankfurt friendly

In preparation for the friendly match between Vietnam national team and German club Frankfurt at My Dinh Stadium on May 9, Henrique Calisto is going to select a 24-man squad but it's not gonna be an easy task for the Portuguese coach.

Players from Binh Duong and Da Nang, which are playing AFC Cup, will be excluded as Calisto revealed. It means he will have to choose some better players from the rest of V-league clubs but injuries are making things worse. Ha Noi T&T's striker Le Cong Vinh, who was relieved to know his ban had been decreased, was unlucky enough to be sidelined for 6 months due to serious injury. More familiar faces like Le Phuoc Tu, Mai Tien Thanh, Nguyen Minh Phuong were also put out of action while some healthy players such as Phan Thanh Binh and Nguyen Viet Thang are nowhere near acceptable form. Some coaches blamed the violence trend of V-League for injury problem.

As the national team 's state is going down, fans are questioning why VFF still closes the door to naturalized players, especially some who did express their wish to play for their second homeland.

New contract for Calisto

VFF, Calisto sign three-year contract

VietNamNet Bridge - The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and Portugal coach Henrique Calisto signed a new three-year contract in Hanoi on March 4.

Calisto will be given the task of helping Vietnam defend its 2008 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF Cup) championship title in 2010 and 2012 and enter World Cup 2014 Qualifiers in the Asian region.

Under the new deal, Calisto will receive a monthly salary of US$22,000, up nearly 100 percent against the previous contract. He will also enjoy other preferences, including accommodations, airfares to Portugal on leave, health insurance, and additional bonuses if the national squad and the Olympic team achieve high results at regional and international tournaments.

VFF Vice Chairman Nguyen Lan Trung says within three years, Calisto will draw up a new strategy for Vietnamese football to take part in regional and continental competitions to live up to spectators’ expectations.

Currently, the national squad has jumped 41 spots to the 114th place in FIFA standings since Calisto accepted to lead the national squad in March 2008.

Vietnam out, Hong Son out?

Away draw with Lebanon saw Vietnam lose its slight chance to qualify for Asian Cup 2011. Obviously Vietnam national team had only themselves to blame as poor finishing cost them at least 5 points in the last 3 games. I believe Vietnam need a sharper striker in front and it's time to recall Huynh Kesley. However it all depends on VFF not Calisto .

Goalkeeper Duong Hong Son, Vietnamese Golden Ball and AFF Cup 2008 MVP, is sure living under huge pressure now as his willingness to play for Vietnam national team is under suspicion. Duong Hong Son had somehow found a ridiculous reason to stay at home right before Vietnam traveled to Lebanon. Many believe that his explanation was a lie. Moreover, Hong Son always had personal reasons to be absent when Vietnam had to play away games in China and Syria. Fans are calling on Calisto to drop Hong Son from Vietnam national team forever.

Vietnam vs Asian teams

After looking at this on FIFA official site, I have found some interesting points about Vietnam results against some regional and continental opponents:

Vietnam vs Singapore: The last time Singapore defeated Vietnam was in the final of Tiger Cup in 1998. It means Vietnam has been unbeaten against Singapore for 12 years.

Vietnam vs Thailand: Thailand is the opponent that Vietnam has met the most (18 times) since 1973 and Vietnam could get only 3 wins.

Vietnam vs Indonesia: Vietnam never considers Indonesia its biggest threat in any competition but the truth is Vietnam has not beaten Indonesia since 1999.

Vietnam vs Malaysia: Vietnam has never played against Malaysia in Malaysia since 1991. 6 of their 8 games were held in Thailand and Indonesia.

Vietnam vs Myanmar: The first time (since 1991) Myanmar won against Vietnam was in 2008. Vietnam won the rest.

Vietnam vs Laos: The first game 2 teams met ended as a draw in 1996. Since then Vietnam has won all 7 games against Laos. Laos has not scored against Vietnam since 1998.

Vietnam vs Cambodia: Vietnam has won all 5 games against Cambodia since 1995, scoring averagely 6.2 goals per match, the highest rate.

Vietnam vs Philippines: The last time 2 teams met was in 2002.

Vietnam has never met Brunei as well as Timor Leste.

Vietnam vs China: Vietnam has lost all of their 4 games against China, scoring 2 goals and conceding 15 goals.

Vietnam vs Japan: The first time was in 1973 and the second time was in 2007.

Vietnam vs South Korea: One win for Vietnam in 2003. Vietnam has played against South Korea 6 times from 1996-2004. More than most other teams.

Vietnam vs Turkmenistan: 5 times. Vietnam's first win was in 2009. The rest are defeats.

Vietnam vs Sri Lanka: 3 games in 5 days in 2002.

Vietnam vs Iran: Vietnam has never met this Asian powerhouse.

Vietnam vs UAE: 3 games from July to October in 2007. One win and two defeats for Vietnam.

Vietnam to play XM Hai Phong

In preparation for the coming Asian Cup Qualifier match against Lebanon in January, Vietnam national team will play a friendly match against V-League side Xi Mang Hai Phong at Lach Tray Stadium on December 24. SEA Games U23 player Thanh Luong anh Thanh Hung were also called up for this game.

Xi Mang Hai Phong (or Hai Phong Cement) is not far too strange to a lot of football fans in the region. They were well-known for successfully persuading former Brazil international Denilson to join their club early this year. Although Denilson has left, many V-League stars have come to XM Hai Phong afterward. The club now is virtually a brand new one compared to itself last season. It's gonna be a tough test for Vietnam.

I'm not a XM Hai Phong fan but honestly this team's squad is one of the best in V-League at the moment. What remains is how the coaches would make that bunch of stars play well and win something. XM Hai Phong will be without Pham Minh Duc and Nguyen Minh Chau for Vietnam NT.

XM Hai Phong players to watch:

XMHP captain Leandro is widely considered
best player of V-League 2009

John Wole, one of best V-League central defenders,
joining XMHP from HCMFC

Nigerian player Aniekan Ekpe, among the best (again!) midfielders of
last season, joining XMHP from Dong Thap

Vietnamese-Nigerian striker Dinh Hoang Max (12)
also left The Vissai Ninh Binh for XMHP

Dinh Hoang Max has earned one cap with Vietnam national team

Lazaro, joining XMHP from Quan Khu 4,
scored 14 goals/26 matches last season

Former Nam Dinh playmaker Nguyen Duc Duong
is a Vietnam international

Goalkeeper Bui Quang Huy, second-choice of Vietnam national team,
also joined XMHP from Nam Dinh

Cong Vinh out, Vietnam hold Syria to draw

Syria v Vietnam: 0-0

Vietnam was the second-best throughout the game. Syria attack forced Vietnamese players to stay deeply in their ground. Nevertheless Vietnam had the best chance to win this game as Quang Hai found himself in a perfect space in front of Syria goalkeeper but his unbelievable miss at a very close range disappointed everyone.

Cong Vinh ended his disappointing performances with a red card today. It was his second red card in 3 matches. Not much pride for Le Cong Vinh, who is considered best Vietnamese player for recent years. Plus his arrogant comments about his Portuguese time prior to two Syria matches. I wonder if Calisto should consider putting him on the bench in upcoming matches. He's got talent but he needs to play football on earth.

On other side, Vietnam U23 goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong deserved all the praises in this match. He played well, successfully dealing with high balls which were Syria main attacking plan today. He should be given more chances with the national team and I think many fans agree that he would be number-one choice for Vietnam national team in near future.

16 November 2009

Vietnam U23 players to play the second-leg

Vietnam national team squad for the away match against Syria will be without Duong Hong Son, Nguyen Minh Phuong, Le Tan Tai, Tran Duy Quang, Tran Trong Binh, Dao Van Phong, Tran Dinh Dong and Bui Quang Huy. Calisto also moved goalkeeper Bui Tan Truong from U23 squad to the senior team. He is 188cm in height and is able to deal with high balls quite well. He may be best choice for Vietnam against taller Syria strikers as the first-leg only goal was scored from a header. Duong Hong Son is a fantastic shot-stopper but high balls are his nightmare.

So in a total of 18 players selected, half of them are U23 players. Calisto will put his faith on young players who has just won VFF Cup for a tough test in Syria. When Vietnam have nothing left to lose, can they make a miracle in Syria ?

14 November 2009

Vietnam lost at last second

Asian Cup 2011 Qualifier:

Vietnam vs Syria: 0-1 FT

The match was pretty even. Not many real chances were created. When everyone expected a goalless draw, Syria scored the only goal with a close-range free header from a free-kick at 94th minutes.
Generally, Vietnam didn't play at its best in this match. After this defeat, Vietnam's chance for a place in Asian Cup 2011 is really slight.

Cong Vinh (9) had a very disappointing game

Syria attack caused some trouble for Vietnam

Tan Tai was best Vietnam player tonight

The only goal was scored from a header

Calisto not pleased with referee about his decision

Syria had a deserved victory
