SLNA target Edmund Owusu-Ansah

Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA), Vietnamese representative in next AFC Cup, is looking to strengthen its squad with a big name from Ghana. Edmund Owusu-Ansah, who was captain of Ghana national team in the African Championship of Nations 2009 (a African Cup featuring only players playing football domestically), may leave his current club Heart of Lions to join the V-League side.

Nothing has been confirmed yet but SLNA board are confident they can secure the signing of Edmund Owusu-Ansah in coming time.

Everybody goes to Sai Gon!

First Division side Xuan Thanh Ha Tinh is newest club relocated to Sai Gon (or Ho Chi Minh city) from Ha Tinh province. The club therefore has a new name, Sai Gon Xuan Thanh. Last year, Quan Khu 4 (now known as Navibank Sai Gon) moved its base from Vinh city to Sai Gon too. Both clubs are backed by huge financial power and are expected to be new powers of the city in near future.

Philippines has finished AFF Cup 2010 Qualifying Rounds at second place after one victory over Timor Leste and two draws against Cambodia and hosts Laos. As a results, they will join Vietnam, Singapore and Myanmar in group B of AFF Cup 2010.

Philippines will be an interesting team to watch in this AFF Cup as they are strengthened by some quality foreign-based players, who are of Filipino descent. Other qualifier is Laos, who will travel to Indonesia to join group A.

*Update: Friendly is canceled because Qatar Olympic team will not fly to Thailand anymore.

South Korea U23 squad for VFF Cup

20 players of South Korea U23 are relatively unknown.

VFF has made it clear this South Korea U23 is only the 'B'  team because best players are in preparation for Asian Games 2010. Nevertheless, this team is still much a worthy opponent to Vietnam, who often struggles against  some South Korea university teams.

Three clubs battle for Santos

After Becamex Binh Duong announced their signing of Vietnamese-Brazilian goalie Phan Van Santos (Fabio Santos), Navibank Sai Gon and The Vissai Ninh Binh immediately voiced their objection. They both claimed their ownership of his contract.

While Santos is remaining silent, it's unsure which club he has signed for. If it turns out that Santos has signed contract with multiple sides, he can face punishment from VFF and FIFA.

Changes in 2011

Binh Duong's stadium at night
V-League 2011 will see a lot of changes made by VFF. Some notable points:

1 - Each club can register 4 foreign players and field 3 in each game.
2 - Each V-League club must have the minimum budget of 25 billion VND (US$ 1,300,000).
3 - It's the first time some V-League games are scheduled for evening (19:45). All stadiums must have lighting system meeting requirement.
4 - The fixtures of first and second leg are drawn separately. V-League 2011 will start on January 22.
5 - Each V-League club must have at least 25 players under professional contracts over a total of 30 players. The remaining slots can be given to young players under youth contract.
6 - Number of promotion/relegation slots between V-League and the First Division varies from 1.5 to 2 depending on the number of professional clubs in First Division.

Losing to Kuwait

Kuwait 3-1 Vietnam (Ajab 68', Al Suliaman 79' 90' - Minh Phuong 57')

After a goalless half, Vietnam broke the deadlock with Minh Phuong's goal from a volley but the visitors couldn't prevent Kuwait from bouncing back with 3 goals in last 20 minutes. Despite losing, we can find some positives from Vietnam national team. Their performance was a lot better compared the last game versus India.

Lee Nguyen's future in doubt

It's reported that American-Vietnamese midfielder Lee Nguyen is looking to exit Binh Duong to save his career.

Following a disappointing season with Chelsea Vietnam, Lee Nguyen's place at his club is now very insecure. It was proved by Binh Duong's signing of Leandro, who plays at the same position as Lee Nguyen. Surely, Binh Duong didn't break the transfer record for the Brazilian player to warm the bench so Lee will face huge challenge from the newcomer for a starting place.

The chance of these two top V-League players playing at the same time is low, though. A member of Binh Duong board revealed that the club would sign one more foreign striker in next BTV Cup. Therefore, Leandro, a new striker and a defender (maybe Egbo Osita) would already fill up the limit of 3 foreigners on the field at the same time. South African player Philani is likely to be naturalized Vietnamese. If it doesn't go on, Lee Nguyen's chance of playing is even lower because Philani has played an integral part of Binh Duong for years.

Consequently, it's no surprise that the one-time American hot prospect is seeking for a fresh start elsewhere. Personally, I think V-League champions Ha Noi T&T would be a good match.

Transfer updates

GK Santos
* Brazilian-born goalkeeper Phan Van Santos officially moved to Binh Duong from Navibank Sai Gon.
* Hai Phong's striker Nguyen Ngoc Thanh joined SHB Da Nang.
* Samson Kayode, who was top striker of Dong Thap last season, signed with Ha Noi T&T. (not confirmed)

Defeat in India

India v Vietnam :3-1 (Sunil Chhetri (3) - Vu Nhu Thanh)

It's always disappointing to see your national team lose but it was worse when the players didn't seem to give a damn care about the scoreline. Yes, it's understood that Henrique Calisto didn't care about the result of friendlies either but I think they should have got more serious in such anticipated game by the hosts.

Technically, Vietnam's defense was very poor. No excuse. If India's attackers had been sharper, they could have scored more than 3 goals.

Asian Games 2010 Draw: Vietnam to meet Iran again

Group C: Korea Republic, Palestine, Jordan, DPR Korea
Group D: Qatar, Kuwait, India, Singapore
Group E: Uzbekistan, UAE, Hong Kong, Bangladesh

Next opponent: India national team

Vietnam national team is going to play a friendly game with the home side in the Indian city of Pune tomorrow. I suppose it's will be better if we know a thing or two about Vietnam's next opponent.

Despite having a population of more than 1 billion alongside with great potential, India is not a powerhouse in Asian football. Their national team is now ranked at 160th position in FIFA ranking and has recently suffered some poor results during their preparation for AFC Asian Cup 2011 held in Qatar. Unlike most other participants who advanced to Asian Cup 2011 through qualification, India got its ticket to Qatar by winning AFC Challenge Cup 2008, a competition for emerging nations only.

Yet, don't underestimate India. They still have the quality to beat any average side in Asia on a fine day. The national team, led by English coach Bob Houghton, is making steady progress with big support from their federation. Honestly, I don't know much about Indian football as well as their players. The only name I can recall is East Bengal striker Baichung Bhutia, who is now 33 but still a very important player of India national team. Another worth-watching player is striker Sunnil Chhetri, who is based in United States.

In history, senior sides from Vietnam and India met each other for the only time in 2004, when Vietnam defeated India 2-1 in Ho Chi Minh City.

India's recent results:
India 0-1 Hong Kong
India 2-0 Namibia
India 1-2 Thailand
Thailand 1-0 India

Highlights: INDIA 1:2 THAILAND

V-League foreigner quota reduced?

It's rumored that each Vietnamese club can register only 4 foreign players for V-League 2011 and field 3 in each game. This is a reduced number comparing to the register quota of 5 in some last seasons. It's believed to be the new solution of VFF against the rising number of naturalized players in V-League. As a matter of fact, 11/14 V-League clubs have at least one naturalized player.

Korea clash at VFF Cup 2010?

Yes, it's one more international tournament held by Vietnam. According to Tuoi Tre News, North Korea and South Korea both have confirmed their participation in VFF Cup 2010 in Ha Noi. However, it's likely to be junior sides from two parts of Korean peninsula.

The fourth team of this competition is SINGAPORE! A bit surprise indeed because Vietnam and Singapore will play each other in AFF Cup 2010 group stage in December. VFF Cup 2010 is scheduled for November 2 to 6.

Vietnam captain Minh Phuong move to Da Nang

Nguyen Minh Phuong, whose contract with Dong Tam Long An expired last month, has opted to join former V-League champions SHB Da Nang with a 3-year deal. Before joing his new club, Minh Phuong had been loyal to Dong Tam Long An for 7 years.

Vietnam Olympic won Eximbank Cup

Following two unconvincing games against Olympic sides from Malaysia and Singapore, Vietnam Olympic entered the third match with Iran U21, knowing that only victory can keep the cup stay at Vietnam. Despite labeled as underdog, the home side had a successful game with a 2-0 triumph over the Iranian side. As a result, Vietnam Olympic won Eximbank Cup 2010.
