Vietnam 6-0 Macau

Le Cong Vinh contributed a hattrick in Falko Gotz's first official match as Vietnam head coach. Three other goals were scored by Pham Thanh Luong, Nguyen Ngoc Thanh and 19-year-old Nguyen Van Quyet, who had his debut today.

The second leg is on July 3rd.

Highlights:

Binh Duong and Lee Nguyen part ways

Binh Duong confirmed that both sides had agreed to terminate their current contract. Lee Nguyen, who scored 2 goals and made 3 assists in 5 appearances this season, is a free agent now. The American international is still seeking Vietnamese nationality and is expected to have it in July. It will open more chances for the 24-year-old in V-League and other Asian leagues like K-League and J-League.

Lee Nguyen is currently recovering from his foot injury. He is going to have a training stint with English side Manchester United in September.

Lack of Height

Average height of Vietnam national team stands at just 1.705 m, well staying among shortest national teams in the world. Among 23 selected players, only three goalkeepers are taller than 1.80m. The Olympic team are better, reaching 1.737 m. The lack of height really makes our defense vulnerable in the air against taller opponents.

This is not the first time people point out the physical weakness of the national team. We conceded 3/5 goals from headers last AFF Cup. In last two friendlies against Dong Nai and DT Long An, we conceded 2/4 goals from easy headers of taller foreign players.

Some writers want to deny this disadvantage with the instances of the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Carles Puyol. They dream Vietnam can adopt the playing style of Barcelona or Spain.

Let's face the truth! Spain stands averagely at 1.81 m in height. Some player may be shorter but are extremely quick, have excellent technique and very good body balance.

What about Vietnam? Our players are shorter, slower and much weaker than most opponents. One of our familiar friendly invitees are South Korea University team, a young amateur team, who Vietnam national team always lose to, just because of physical disadvantage.

One thing not many realize: Physical attributes are one of most important things in football of low level. It's not technique and tactics because we are all as bad as other teams. To step up to higher level, the first thing to do is getting quicker, taller and stronger.

Goals galore at Hang Day

Hanoi T&T vs HAGL: 6-2

New record of highest scoring game this season. Hanoi T&T's Cape Verdean striker Antonio Tavares netted a hattrick today. Le Cong Vinh, Vo Duy Nam and Nguyen Tang Tuan also scored today to impress new Vietnam coach Falko Goetz, who was spotted on the stands.

Can Binh Duong be champions?

With a number of quality names in the rank, Becamex Binh Duong have been always considered one of favourites to win V-League for some recent years. Yet, they underperforms this season, just like last year, lying at 6th position with 11 points behind leaders SLNA at the moment. Although the club has been the most impressive one since the second phase of V-League 2011 began, they are still too far from being a serious candidate for championship.

For the last 4 seasons, a V-League champion earns averagely 49.5 points. With 25 points right now and 8 rounds to go, Binh Duong can get a maximum of 49 points in case they win the rest of their games. Just to tell it will need something magnificent to see Binh Duong crowned for the third time.

Lee Nguyen Interview on MLSsoccer.com

American Exports: Nguyen deals with delays, decisions
by Greg Seltzer

Vietnamese league star and former US international Lee Nguyen tells MLSsoccer.com the stress fracture in his foot is slowly coming along after finally being diagnosed correctly last month.

The 24-year-old, who was recently revealed as the highest-paid professional athlete in Vietnam, has been limited to just five appearances from a possible 16 V-League games this season for club team Binh Duong. He has not been fit to play since leaving their March 19 draw at Ha Noi ACB after 80 minutes with what appeared to be, at the time, a minor recurring injury.

"I can't wait until I can get back out on the pitch," Nguyen told MLSsoccer.com by phone from his home near Dallas. "I've had a foot injury that has been nagging since February."

He played into March with discomfort, even completing a March 13 brace with the 4-3 winner over Lam So'n Thanh Hoa. The following week, the injury was exacerbated.

"It happened in a game and I got kicked or stepped on pretty hard," he said. "I didn't realize it at first because it wasn't extremely painful and almost felt like a bruise, but three weeks later the pain still didn't go away. I then went to get it checked and turns out I had a stress fracture on the side of my foot."

He's back in the US for rehab, but also to decide what to do when his contract expires at season's end.

"I am back here in the States to see what the best solution is for my well-being and my future," he said. "I will be looking at all my options, not just Vietnam."

Another pressing matter is his pending application for a Vietnamese passport, which would allow Nguyen to remain a star in his ancestral second home without taking up a foreign player slot.

"The process is currently under way and many people are working on [it]," he said. "I feel very confident that my Vietnamese citizenship will be granted."

With only three friendly US caps, the new passport would also give Nguyen the option of switching his FIFA international allegiance to Vietnam.

"There is potential for it happening, but it’s something I won't think about just yet," he said. "I think what happens in the next year and where I decide to sign will have a lot to do with it."

Since Nguyen went down with the injury, Binh Duong have won just once in nine games to slip to eighth in the 14-team V-League. They will visit Khanh Hoa on Sunday.

Falko Goetz arrives in Vietnam

German coach Falko Goetz has arrived in Hanoi this morning to discuss terms with VFF officials. An official signing ceremony is expected on June 6th.
