Vietnam v Kuwait U23: Victory, a must?

Vietnam NT will start Thang Long International Cup with the game versus Kuwait U23 tomorrow afternoon. Although Henrique Calisto has made it clear that results are not important in this friendly tournament, winning against a young team with the average age of 19.7 is what AFF Cup 2008 champions could and definitely should do.

Moreover, just one year ago, Vietnam did defeat the senior team of Kuwait 1-0 right on their land. That victory virtually confirmed our readiness to challenge stronger teams outside Southeast Asia. Therefore, if not defeating some kids of Kuwait in tomorrow game, it will be not only a shame but also a big setback of quality and ambition. Victory is the only choice!

According to Thanh Nien News, Keo Sokngon is a Cambodian football international that has Vietnamese root.

The 18-year-old player, who wears number 10 of Cambodia national team, is one of best prospects of Cambodian football. Born in Cambodia but Keo Sokngon has a Vietnamese mother and spent many years of his childhood living in Vietnam. Therefore, he can speak Vietnamese fluently. He is currently playing for C-League champions Phnom Penh Crown, scoring 12 goals last season.

It is reported that two Vietnamese clubs, Binh Duong and Can Tho, want to sign this young player. Moreover, there is also interest from some Thai clubs. In a interview with goal.com back in 2007, Keo Sokngon expressed his wish to play for V-League side HAGL.

In Southeast Asia, there are two more football internationals of Vietnamese descent. They are Dao Khotsaya of Laos U23 and former Thailand's striker Natipong Sritong-in.

Three goals in second half sink Da Nang

AFC Cup 2010 Quarter Final Leg 1:
Al-Riffa v Da Nang: 3-0

Going into this game, Da Nang was looking for a draw but they can't hold on after half-time. Three goals, one long shot, one header from freekick and one penalty shot during injury time were enough for the Bahraini side to keep a huge advantage before entering the second next week.

For Da Nang, they were unable to attack. With only Nicolas Hernandez in front, Da Nang didn't cause any trouble for Al-Riffa. The defense was pretty poor too when Da Nang defenders made a lot of mistakes. It explains why the club conceded 44 goals/26 games in V-League 2010, a defense record that was better than only 2 teams.

14 September 2010

Leandro join Binh Duong

Binh Duong president Nguyen Minh Son informed that Brazilian midfielder Leandro, one of biggest V-League stars, had agreed to join Binh Duong. Contract terms are undisclosed but it's believed that it's a 3-year contract with a salary not less than what he had got paid in his previous club Hai Phong, about US$15,000 per month.

Chelsea Vietnam is never a noisy club in transfer market but often secures big signings. The team also added another V-League star Lee Nguyen to its squad 5 months ago.

13 September 2010

Da Nang fly to Bahrain without Merlo

Matias Eduardo (31) and Hoa Phat's Cassiano
Da Nang striker Gaston Merlo, who has been top scorer of V-League for last two seasons, will be absent in the first leg of AFC Cup 2010 quarter-final after collecting two yellow cards. It is a huge loss for the Vietnamese side who is likely to be without another key player, injured Nguyen Rogerio. Gaston Merlo has hit 5 goals in AFC Cup 2010 so far.

Because naturalized player Nguyen Rogerio will counted as domestic player from quarter-final on, Da Nang will add one more foreigner to its squad. Matias Eduardo, who has enjoyed good form recently, will have the chance to play continental games and will replace Gaston Merlo in the next game.

Besides Merlo and Rogerio, Da Nang can't have the service of some first team players like Nguyen Sa, Hoang Quang, Van Meo due to injury and Duc Cuong, Thanh Phuc who joined Hoa Phat after V-League 2010 ended.

Ha Noi T&T coach Phan Thanh Hung, who is temporarily in charge of Vietnam Olympic team, will need Calisto's approval before asking VFF and Cambodia side to arrange a friendly game.

Thang Long Cup: Teams squad announced

Vietnam
North Korea
Australia U23
Kuwait U23

North Korea seems to be the most serious sides among 3 invited teams when they will send a squad including 15 World Cup 2010 players. Five of them, which are Ri Myong Guk, Ri Kwang Chon, Pak Nam Chol, Mun In Guk and Pak Chol Jin, started the Brazil game. New head coach, Jo Tong Sop, will be in charge in this tournament.

Just skimming the squad list. Australia U23 and Kuwait U23 turned out to be U21 sides. It is understood that club sides can't let their important players leave to play non FIFA games at this point of time.

'Cow field' said Calisto

In a recent interview, Vietnam head coach Henrique Calisto has called football pitches of Vietnamese clubs 'cow field' for their poor quality. He also blamed Vietnamese clubs for misusing their money such as paying billions of VND to buy just one player but not improving necessary facilities.

My Dinh Stadium is the only stadium meeting requirements in Vietnam but it has never been used for V-League games. Other stadiums are in poor state and worse comparing to ones in China and Thailand. The Portuguese tactician believed the quality of football in Vietnam can improve by 25% if the pitches are better.

Kesley is leading again

VietNamNet Bridge - Brazilian-born striker Kesley Huynh Alves of Binh Duong leads the top goal scorer list and is likely to grab the nation’s Golden Boot award for highest goal scorer of the year.

Kesley has 74 points and stands in first place beating off runner-up Nguyen Quang Hai of Khanh Hoa, who scored 13 goals and has 41 points, Binh Duong teammate Nguyen Anh Duc, stands in third place, with 10 goals and 39 points, the prize organising committee told Viet Nam News yesterday.

The striker, who was granted Vietnamese citizenship last year, scored 14 of Binh Duong’s 48 goals in the national V-League premier football championship this season, which ended last Sunday.

Goals scored in the V-League, National Cup, Super Cup, First-Division are taken into account, as are goals scored at official matches organised by FIFA, the Asian Football Confederation and the ASEAN Football Federation, as well as international friendly matches from January to December.

Nguyen Minh Hung, vice chairman of HCM City Journalists Association’s Sport Reporters Club, added that the 30-year-old striker is a favourite for the prize as he tops the list of 197 Vietnamese goal scorers.

In 2005, the Brazilian-born player won top scorer and best foreign player in the V-League with 21 goals for Binh Duong.

In 2009, he was the second Brazilian-born footballer called up by the national team to a training session for the Asian Cup qualifiers.

The organising committee will officially announce the winner on December 31, while an award ceremony will be held at HCM City’s Palace Hotel in January.

The winner will walk away with a Golden Boot and a cash-prize of VND20 million (US$1,000).

Last year, Kesley won the Golden Boot award for the first time with 17 goals.
