Binh Duong v Thanh Hoa: 5-2
Ha Noi T&T v Hoa Phat: 1-2
HAGL v Khanh Hoa: 1-0
Dong Thap v Nam Dinh: 2-0
DT Long An v Ninh Binh: 3-1
Navibank Sai Gon v SLNA: 0-0

The first round of second phase saw Binh Duong completely outplayed Thanh Hoa at Go Dau stadium. Huynh Kesley scored a hattrick while on-form striker Nguyen Anh Duc contributed 2 goals. Binh Duong new signing Lee Nguyen also had an outstanding debut as he created 3 goals. This victory helped Binh Duong climb to the top position of the table. 'Chelsea Vietnam' currently have the best attacking power in the league, with averagely 2.3 goals scored per game.

Another big name SHB Da Nang was defeated 1-3 by a brilliant Hai Phong. The host created series of chances and deservedly won the game. Hai Phong captain Leandro was unsurprisingly man of match yesterday.

A total of 97,000 fans have attended 7 games yesterday, averagely 13,857 per game, is the new record of this season.

V-League 2010: Mid-season transfer round-up

Mid-season register window of V-league 2010 was closed much earlier than I had expected. There were only a few days for Vietnamese clubs to fill their squad with new names. A lot of transfers which mostly are for foreign imports were made during this short but busy time. However, some may feel disappointed because there was no 'Denilson affair' like last last summer.LOL

SHB DA NANG

Matias

Modou

V-league defending champions have added Argentine striker Matias Recio and Gambia international Modou Jagne, who is also a striker, to their squad. To make room for newcomers, Da Nang has terminated contract of two Argentine youngsters, Cesar Cocchi and Diego Mendez.

HA NOI T&T
Carlos Fangueiro
(carlosfangueiro.com)

Ha Noi T&T signed Portuguese striker Carlos Fangueiro from Beira-Mar and Brazilian striker Luciano Fonseca. Both are over 30 but they are highly rated by Ha Noi T&T coach. It shows the new trend of transfers in Vietnam, oldie but goodie.
The most surprised departure is Francois Endene's move to Hoa Phat. Defender Trong Binh and Lawrence Kizito also left the club.

BECAMEX BINH DUONG

Abbey

Except Vietnamese-American midfielder Lee Nguyen, Becamex Binh Duong didn't make any big addition. They moved Ghanaian defender Abbey Ebenezer from TDC Binh Duong to senior team and captured defender Luu Ngoc Hung from Ho Chi Minh City FC. Amaobi and Chau Phong Hoa left the club.

Chau Phong Hoa

Ninh Binh bought Chau Phong Hoa from Binh Duong and signed Swedish player Olof Hviden-Watson. Jucelio Da Silva, who was not registered for the first phase, returned to Ninh Binh squad.

They also added experienced GK Phan Van Santos and young midfielder Van Khai from DT Long An. A number of players including Suleiman, Flavio Cruz and Martins Trindade... had to leave the club.

Updates about Atletico Madrid friendlies in Vietnam

(Pic:AP)

T&T Group, VFF and Atletico Madrid have come to an agreement about a friendly tour of the new Europa League champions in Vietnam in August. As planned, Atletico Madrid will play two games, one against Vietnam national team and one against Ha Noi T&T or SHB Da Nang (both are under control of T&T Group). Besides Vietnam, Los Colchoneros will also visit China and some southeast asian countries.

UPDATES - Atletico's friendlies in Vietnam will probably be canceled as VFF and T&T Group couldn't agree on the shares of appearance fee.

Navibank Sai Gon looking for new faces

Navibank Sai Gon are looking to bring some new players to Thong Nhat Stadium with the aim of improving the performance of the new V-League club.

New coach Mai Duc Chung believes poor quality of Navibank Sai Gon squad is one of main reasons for its recent bad results so new signings will be necessary. The club have already successfully convinced Dong Tam Long An to sell young midfielder Dang Van Khai. This is their second signing after Vietnam international Long Giang moved to the Sai Gon-based club from Tien Giang. Navibank Sai Gon is also chasing goalkeeper Phan Van Santos and will try to borrow him from Dong Tam Long An.

All-time list of foreign football players in Vietnam

It's no exaggeration to say foreign players play a very important part in the success of the V-league since its birth in 2000. They come from all over the world, from South East Asian countries such as Thailand, Cambodia to far lands like Europe, America and Africa. Some spent a short time playing in Vietnam but there are some spending their whole career here. I must admit I love the colors they bring to Vietnamese football.

So, I have built the All-time list of foreign players in Vietnam in order to give football fans more info about their favourite players. The list currently covers nearly 200 players, listed by nationality.

I believe it still lacks a lot so any addition, correction or suggestion would be much appreciated.

Waving flag - K'Naan

Some Vietnamese boys are featured in the unofficial World Cup 2010 music video. There are also a lot of scenes filmed in the countryside of Vietnam.

Is it only me or does K'Naan look like Adebayor?

AFC Cup: Da Nang won after extra time

Da Nang v Binh Duong: 4-3 (Merlo (2), Duy Lam, Hung Son - Anh Duc, Philani, Kesley)

A thrilling encounter ended as a victory for home team Da Nang. The scoreline was 2-2 after 90 mins and Merlo put Da Nang in front with his second goal in the first half of extra-time. However, Kesley quickly scored the third goal to equalize for Binh Duong. When fans and both sides thought the winner would be determined by penalty-shooting, Da Nang's super substitute Doan Hung Son scored the winning goal at the last minute of extra-time to send the home fans into rapture. Da Nang advanced to the quarter-finals of AFC Cup 2010!

V-League Focus: Evaldo Goncalves

Name: Evaldo Rodrigues Goncalves
DOB: 10/01/1981

Club: HAGL

If you have a chance to ask HAGL boss Kiatisuk Senamuang which one of his players makes him pleased most at the moment, there would be no surprise if the answer is Evaldo Goncalves. And I'm sure HAGL fans also share the same opinion.

HAGL doesn't have many good strikers in this season and all the hope in front was put on Evaldo. From what we has seen, undoubtedly he is driving his club forward. With 9 goals in 11 games of V-League 2010, Evaldo is now leading in top goal-scorers chart along side Da Nang's Gaston Merlo. And the award of Best Player of April was a fair applause for him.

(Pic from haglfc.net)

Let's go back a few years to know more about him. According to some sources, Evaldo started his football career with a Chinese Super League club naming Xiamen Lanshi in 2000. However, from 2001 to 2005, there was not much info about him or maybe he didn't play football professionally during that period. In 2006, he played for Uniao Bandeirante in Brazil and then moved to a few more domestic clubs such as Caldense, America RJ and Joinville in the next 2 years. Joinville was later disbanded after relegated from Serie C in 2008 and Evaldo switched to V-League at that time.

When Evaldo joined HAGL in 2009, he was regarded as cover for another Brazilian striker Agostinho, who had been the club's main scorer since 2008. Nevertheless, Agostinho was suddenly fired due to a conflict with Lee Nguyen, a new signing (who was also fired early this year) at that point of time. The departure of Agostinho meant HAGL had no more choice but Evaldo in forward position. When the chances came, he made it to score 11 goals in V-League 2009 and some of them were extremely important ones.

(Pic from haglfc.net)

After a successful season, at least for himself, Evaldo decided to bring his whole family to Vietnam in order to focus more on his job. Regarding his contribution since the beginning of 2010 season, HAGL board are understandably happy, not only because of his goals but also his professional behaviour. He is becoming a new symbol of the club on Central Highland.

Vietnamese Golden Ball Award 2009 race has come to an end. The final outcome was announced on May 7. ACB Ha Noi midfielder Pham Thanh Luong won the most illustrious award of Vietnamese football as he earned most votes from pundits.

Golden Ball: Pham Thanh Luong (301 votes)
Silver Ball: Nguyen Vu Phong (245 votes)

Bronze Ball: Bui Tan Truong ( 197 votes)

Best young player: Nguyen Trong Hoang (SLNA)
Best foreign player: Gaston Merlo (Da Nang)

Let's find out more about these players:

1. Golden Ball: Pham Thanh Luong:

DOB: 10/09/1988
Club: ACB Ha Noi.
International level: Vietnam U23 captain.

Pham Thanh Luong is the first Golden Ball Award winner that doesn't play in top Vietnamese competition (currently the V-League). Luong is best known for his magical left leg that makes his famous nickname Luong "dị" ("dị" can be understood as "weird", referring to his left leg). Consistence and enthusiasm is what people always see in his performance. In Vietnam national team, Luong is a favoured player under Calisto's reign. He was appointed as Vietnam U23 captain last year and played very well to help his team reach the final of SEA Games 25. This season Luong's club ACB Ha Noi are dominating in the First Division and making firm steps to return to V-League. His loyalty and simple lifestyle is also highly rated by his fans and teammates.

2. Silver Ball: Nguyen Vu Phong

DOB: 06/02/1985
Club: Binh Duong

Nguyen Vu Phong is a famous name in Vietnam. He is an important member of Binh Duong. Last year, Vu Phong played outstandingly to help his club reach the semi-final of AFC Cup and contributed a lot of crucial goals in V-League as well.

3. Golden Ball: Bui Tan Truong

DOB: 1986
Club: Dong Thap

Despite young age, Bui Tan Truong is widely considered one of the best Vietnamese goalkeepers at this time. He played brilliantly last season and became number-one goalkeeper of Vietnam U23 during SEA Games 25.

4. Best young player: Nguyen Trong Hoang.

DOB: 1989
Club: Song Lam Nghe An.

SLNA is well-known for producing a lot of Vietnamese football talents such as Van Sy Hung, Pham Van Quyen and Le Cong Vinh and their fans hope Nguyen Trong Hoang will soon become a new symbol of SLNA. This 21-year-old attacking midfielder is now one of the most important players in Vinh-based club. He is also a member of Vietnam national team and Vietnam U23.

5. Best foreign player: Gaston Merlo.

DOB: 1985
Club: Da Nang

The Argentine striker is well-deserved with the Best Foreign Player Award as he played very well last season, contributing 14 goals to help Da Nang win the V-league 2009 title. Merlo is now a key player of the Han-river team and still keeps his brilliant scoring form with 9 goals in 9 games of this season.

Binh Duong defeated Da Nang to go top

Binh Duong v Da Nang: 2-0 (Anh Duc, Kesley)
Goals and highlights

Binh Duong deservedly earned an important 2-0 victory over V-League defending champions Da Nang this afternoon. South African player Philani shined as he contributed two perfect assists to his team. On-form striker Nguyen Anh Duc scored the opening goal with a header and the second goal came from Huynh Kesley at 94th minute.

Two biggest games of the season

V-league 2009 champions Da Nang have traveled to Binh Duong to prepare for a crucial V-league clash against the host on May 7. The winner of tomorrow game will surely have a big advantage in the title race. Da Nang are currently staying on the top of V-league table after a thrilling victory over Hoa Phat while Binh Duong are right behind.

Go Dau stadium is likely to be full tomorrow and nearly 20,000 fans would be a major boost for Binh Duong in this big game. History also stands on Binh Duong's side because Da Nang has never got a good result here. One more factor that makes Binh Duong fans believe in a victory is the excellent form of their attackers who scored 16 goals in last 4 games.

Yet, it's not everything both sides set their mind to. Just 4 days later, one more Da Nang - Binh Duong match will be played at Chi Lang stadium. The one-off AFC Cup game will determine who will represent Vietnam in the quarter-finals of this tournament. However, for many Vietnamese fans and both teams, this game is also considered the second leg of the final of 2010 season. In 2009, Da Nang won V-League title but their achievement was outshined by Binh Duong' success in AFC Cup. Da Nang was also known as a very poor and humiliated performer when playing continental competitions. So, this game will be the best chance for Da Nang to prove their domination in Vietnam as well as regaining some reputation.

Let's wait and see.
